Yogyakarta: Java’s Kingdom
We talk about certain cities being the heart and soul of their country, and in Indonesia’s case, Yogyakarta or Jogja is the place. The art scene is at its brightest, the food is varied and exciting, the Javanese language is at its purest, and even the Sultan lives in the old quarter near Kraton. The city has grown over the years and holds many hidden secrets and it is an absolute joy to explore. From morning until night there is always something going on; check out the street food, silversmith artisans as well as taking a fun-filled evening out to the famous Banyan Trees that you have to see, if you can walk through blindfolded, or, perhaps, simply enjoy a traditional Wayang puppet show.
Outside of the city the area is blessed with incredible day tours from hidden beaches to volcano treks, caving, tubing and mountain biking. Also, for you antique hunters, we arrange day trips to the markets and shops of the nearby city of Surakarta City or Solo. It’s not just the day tours that make Jogja the perfect Javanese base, but you also get to discover the incredible temples of Borobudur and Prambanan, which are simply mind-blowing.
On this extended city break you simply get the best of culture, food, discovery and Yogyakarta really has it all, and it is a city full of surprises.
